Showcase: The Universe

Opening night sets the tone for the entire market, and this one had a presenter to accommodate. Professor Brian Cox was speaking live inside the environment, which meant the visuals had to support a talk rather than compete with one.

Four walls of continuous projection removes the audience's sense of a front. That's the point — it places the room inside the solar system rather than in front of a picture of it — but it also means there's no safe place for a presenter to stand and no natural moment for attention to shift.

The fly-through was built to breathe. Movement slows and darkens where Cox is speaking, then opens out between passages, using the scale of the room at the moments when scale is the argument.

Astronomical distance is famously hard to convey; the honest version is mostly empty space, and empty space is not a spectacle. The sequence trades literal accuracy for perceptual accuracy, compressing the journey while holding the relative sense of how far apart everything sits.
