Opening night sets the tone for the entire market, and this one had a presenter to accommodate. Professor Brian Cox was speaking live inside the environment, which meant the visuals had to support a talk rather than compete with one.

Four walls of continuous projection removes the audience’s sense of a front. That’s the point — the room sits inside the solar system instead of in front of a picture of it — but it also means there’s no natural place for a presenter to stand and no obvious moment for attention to shift.

So the fly-through was paced around him. The movement slows and darkens while Cox is speaking, then opens out between passages, saving the full scale of the room for the moments that are actually about scale.

Astronomical distance is hard to show honestly, because the honest version is mostly empty space. The sequence compresses the journey but keeps the relative distances believable, so the solar system still feels like it has gaps in it.
