Challenge
BBC Showcase is the world’s largest single distributor sales event, presenting the best of BBC Studios’ content to an international market of broadcasters, commissioners and buyers. Each year the event features premiere screenings of the most anticipated titles coming to the global market.
Approach
Showcase premieres carry a specific pressure: the audience isn't the public but the buyers, and they're watching to decide whether to commission. The content has to sell a series to people who have spent the entire week being sold to.
For A Perfect Planet, the venue became the delivery. Immersive projection wrapped the screening space so the series' natural-history photography arrived as environment rather than as a clip reel — the room becoming the planet the programme describes, before a word of narration.
The structure followed the series' own logic. The elemental forces that organise the programme — volcanoes, sunlight, weather, oceans — were each given their own passage and their own sonic treatment, rather than being cut together into a montage.
Experimental sound design carried the transitions. In a room with no conventional screen edge, audio does the work that framing usually does: telling an audience where to look, and when the subject has changed.
