Challenge
Walking with Dinosaurs returns with a title sequence built around excavation. Fossilised bones resolve slowly out of darkness, textured and lit like the dig site rather than the reconstruction, and at the end the main title is swept clear of dust — uncovered, like everything else in the series.
Approach
The new series rebuilds Walking with Dinosaurs around a structural change. Where the original presented dinosaurs as wildlife documentary subjects, the six-part revival — a BBC Studios co-production with ZDF and France Télévisions — follows individual animals recovered from active dig sites, cutting between palaeontologists in the field and the reconstruction of the creature they are uncovering.
That structure is what the titles had to set up. Opening on spectacle would have promised a different programme.
So the sequence begins underground and in shadow, resolving fossilised bone from darkness at the pace of excavation rather than the pace of a trailer. Naturalistic texture and restrained lighting keep it in the register of the dig site.
The main title arrives the same way: swept clear of dust and particulate, uncovered rather than placed.
