Challenge

To celebrate the launch of the BBC Green Planet AR Experience, the Piccadilly Circus DeepScreen was transformed into a large format nature installation. Using 4K DeepScreen technology, the iconic screen came alive with lush plant life gradually spreading across the entire display — bringing the world of the BBC series into one of London’s most visible public spaces.

Approach

The takeover ran twenty minutes on Piccadilly Lights — Europe's largest digital advertising display, and a screen that competes with the traffic, the crowd and everything else in the circus.

Attenborough's appearance wasn't filmed conventionally. He was volumetrically captured during the pandemic in a cylindrical rig of seventy cameras against green screen, then rebuilt as a fully rendered three-dimensional figure. That is the difference between a man on a billboard and a man apparently standing in Piccadilly Circus, and it set the register for everything built around him.

The plant life was made to spread across the full curve of the display rather than sit inside a frame, using Ocean's 4K DeepScreen so the growth read with depth against the architecture behind it.

The activation continued past the screen. A live plant installation wrapped the steps of the nearby Eros Memorial, extending the greening to street level — all of it pointing at the Green Planet AR Experience then running at 55 Regent Street, created by Factory 42 with BBC Studios.
